Points on Prince William County

As one of the commonwealth's 95 counties, Prince William County is located in the Washington-Arlington metropolitan area and as of 2007, it is home to 383,644 residents. The county is located in the northern part of Virginia along the Potomac River with Loudoun, Fairfax, Fauquier and Stafford Counties as neighbors. The independent city of Manassas is its county seat. The county's population is diverse and the population density of 1,032 people per square mile. The typical resident is 32 years old, married, educated, travels 37 minutes to work, lives in a household of three, and enjoy a household income of $81,904.

Education
Of residents age 25 and older, 88.8% have at least a high school diploma and 31.5% have at least a bachelor's degree; both figures are above the national average. The county boasts the 2nd-largest school system in the Commonwealth of Virginia, just behind Fairfax. Prince William Public Schools operates 62 elementary, 15 middle and 10 high schools. The district also manages a virtual high school, 2 traditional schools, 5 special education schools, and 2 alternative schools. There are also 7 private and religious schools located in the county. Colleges and universities in the county include Northern Virginia Community College, George Mason University, Strayer University with campuses in Woodbridge and Manassas, and the University of Northern Virginia at Manassas.

Culture and Recreation
With a county as historic as Prince William, there is much to do and see. The new National Museum of the Marine Corps located in Quantico is a free admission museum and is the centerpiece of the Marine Corps Heritage Center. The museum has six permanent historical exhibits and numerous artifacts. There are also four national protected areas in the county including the 325-acre Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge, the Manassas National Battlefield Park, the 644-acre Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Prince William Forest Park. The Manassas National Battlefield Park is north of Manassas and preserves the sites of two major Civil War battles. Both the First and Second Battle of Bull Run were fought on these grounds. The Park now allows visitors to learn about the turbulent past and explore the historic terrain. Encompassing over 15,000 acres, the Prince William Forest Park is the largest protected natural area in the Washington D.C. metro area. It shows what much of the East Coast used to look like prior to European settlement. The forest provides 37 miles of hiking trails leading to historical and cultural destinations, 21 miles of bicycle trails, wildlife viewing, and varying camping options from family tent areas to rustic cabins.
